Newton Derby is at the forefront of power generation for the rail industry with several flagship projects delivered over the past few years. These include projects for Transport for London, which is responsible for upgrading, replacing and maintaining two thirds of the London Underground. London Underground carries over one billion passengers per year, which is as many as the entire National Rail network carries.

To overcome the legacy of under-investment, Transport for London has embarked on a massive investment programme to deliver the extra capacity needed to keep pace with rising demand. The level of renewal and refurbishment work is on a scale unseen for more than 60 years and presents a major challenge: maintaining the service during the biggest rebuilding programme the Underground has ever seen.

Last year Newton Derby installed three containerised rotary frequency changers which provide power to 3 station signalling areas on the Metropolitan Line which services 34 stations over a distance of 41.5 miles.

As part of this programme, Newton Derby has been awarded a further contract to supply five containerised frequency converters which will provide power to 6 station signalling areas for the 40 mile District Line serving 60 stations.

The generators and control gear have all been supplied in containerised units complete with building services, remote monitoring and communications. As they provide the supply for the track signalling system, reliability is paramount and the system has been designed with two generators operating in parallel so that there is redundancy in case of a failure. The system even has two independent supplies and the generators will continue to operate and ride through a supply failure.

Stephen Wood, general manager for Newton Derby, is delighted with the new contract and believes that the company’s industry knowledge combined with the all round capabilities of Winder Power Limited was a large factor in its success. As he explains:

“Newton Derby is very proud of its specialist industry expertise and few companies can compete with us when it comes to power generation solutions for the rail industry.”

Project manager for London Underground, Chris Ashcroft, confirms the success of the partnership. He adds:

“Newton Derby were able to provide a full service for our requirements, and their experience meant that the installation procedure led to minimum disruption to our service, which is the most important thing.”

London Underground was formed in 1985, but its history dates back to 1863 when the world’s first underground railway opened. Today, London Underground is a major business with three million passenger journeys made every day, serving 275 stations and over 255 miles of railway.

Newton Derby’s understanding of the unique environments faced by the rail industry combined with the skills of its team and that of its sister division Winder Electrical means that the company is ideally placed to provide a total generation solution for the rail industry.
