Newton Derby has announced that it has secured a contract to supply exciters for two brand new aircraft carriers.
The two exciters, manufactured on behalf of Parsons Peebles Generation, will supply the field power to the dockside frequency convertors used by the aircraft carriers during their construction phase.
The QE Class carriers, the largest the British Navy has ever operated, are being delivered by the Aircraft Carrier Alliance.
The new UK Royal Navy aircraft carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales, are expected to enter service in 2016 and 2018.
Some amazing fact and figures:
Each ship will stand taller than Nelson’s column, weigh more than 32,500 average family cars and will be a similar size and weight as the ocean liner QE2. Each ship will typically have a crew of 600 plus an additional 600 air crew.
Each ship will carry over 8,600 tonnes of fuel to support the Ship and her aircraft – enough for the average family car to travel to the moon and back twelve times, with a flight deck size equivalent to 49 tennis courts or three football pitches.
Designing and building the ships is expected to sustain and create some 10,000 jobs across the UK throughout their design and manufacture.

“This fantastic new contract win follows on from Newton Derby’s recent contract at RAF Coningsby, home of the Typhoon fighter squadron, and demonstrates our track record and success at providing the armed forces with top quality power generation products that are designed to withstand the rigours of these demanding military environments.”
