Stand-By-Generation

Newton Derby’s sister company, Winder Electrical, provided the step-up transformers, switchgear and installation.

Although Newton Derby has a rich history of supplying the armed forces, this latest contract marked a successful realignment strategy by the management team. Historically Newton Derby has been synonymous with portable generator units for the armed forces, including AC and DC generators for armoured vehicles, ground power units and unmanned air vehicles. This latest contract win demonstrates that the company’s technical and project management skills now enables it to successfully manage a much wider range of projects.

The provision of stand-by generators is a growing industry, with several leading utility and military organisations relying on Newton Derby to deliver reliable back up power supplies for demanding environments.

Transformer Services

One of Newton Derby’s recent projects is the delivery of a complex stand-by power generation project for RAF Coningsby.

The new generators will be used to support the four Typhoon Squadrons based at the Lincolnshire RAF station. Newton Derby was responsible for project managing the entire contract, which involved some of the leading companies in their field, to provide the specialist services required.

RAF Coningsby required two generators delivering 2MW total load, as well as an acoustically attenuated building enclosure, new fuel supply pipe work, daily use fuel tank, and all associated High Voltage (HV) and Low Voltage (LV) switch gear.

The installation also included a control and synchronisation panel, step-up transformers and protection. As part of the works a new UPS installation to four squadron buildings are to be provided.
